In the summer of 2022, I worked as an electrics intern at the Des Moines Metro Opera! This meant many things, including working with other interns and staff members, as well as the lead electrician (Sammy Jelinek), assistant lead electrican (Mack Woods) and the lighting supervisor (Bridget Williams) to bring various lighting designer's visions to the stage. A few things I did throughout the summer included wiring many practicals, quickly focusing plenty of lights and running the lights board for Midsummer Night's Dream. After we opened, I helped our team change the gels and set up booms/practicals between the shows during changeovers. I also got to implement a labeling system that I personally devised for each fixtur, showing its colors/gobos and making changeover even faster and smoother (see a photo of it below). I worked on a wide variety of big and small jobs throughout the summer, and it not only gave me valuable practical knowledge, but it also showed me how fulfilling it could be to feel like a part of a team that I looked forward to working with every day.
A picture of the labeling system! The three dots indicate a gobo, and the purple is the light's channel. Anytime the designer would change a gel, we could tape over the individual show with a small piece of gaff and write the new gel on it.
